The Fat Trap

Posted by

The Fat Trap is an article written by Tara Parker-Pope that talks about obesity issue and why no matter how some try to keep off the fat – they gain it back after months of effort.

According to this article and researches, it’s not just will power that has something to do with losing because on some of their studies with people who were obese and lost some pounds – after a year or two they gained it back. Again and again, they would come back to their doctors.

“It has always seemed strange to me,” says Proietto, who is a physician at the University of Melbourne. “These are people who are very motivated to lose weight, who achieve weight loss most of the time without too much trouble and yet, inevitably, gradually, they regain the weight.”

Apparently, people are not just gaining weight back due to lack of motivation – but also because there is something in our body that’s keeping us to do keep losing weight. They say there’s a variant in some of the people’s human blood called FTO, wherein, in experiments done – people who had this shown they gained more weight compared to those who don’t have it and yet, they had the same weight before the experiment.

Meaning to say, it’s not entirely our fault partly because of the lack of discipline, yes. But researches and experiments has also concluded that even with those who were not with extra weight – if they went on a diet or limited their food intake, after a while they gain the lost weight and add more.

Some other researchers also tried to conduct an experiment on reactions of people with food for those who tried to lose weight for awhile. It turns out that the reaction of most were for “being rewarded”. This goes to show that the body itself is trying to regain the lost weight rather than keeping it off permanently. Thus, the person has to look over his or her weight if he or she really wants to keep her ideal weight as it is or lose more.

They’ve also concluded that the main solution if you want to lose weight is to focus on your health instead of shedding off pounds to be the same as you were in your teens, it is never easy not only for the mind but also for the body because becomes violent and looks for the lost weight as it has become accustomed that you need more than you need less.

It’s a very interesting discussion over the health articles I’ve ever read, and well, also I can relate I guess :)
